Yes this is good news. The GOP must adopt support for a Progressive Tax System well keeping everything else the same. If they just change taxes and move to the right on everything else they will be unstopable.

Back in the 90s our GOP gov'r suggested the creation of an income tax. Conservatives instigated a riot in downtown Nashville, preventing traffic from flowing and causing damage to the State Capitol. Nobody was ever charged with a crime and the tax plan was nixed. Expect more of the same.

State income taxes on top of federal income taxes are an annoyance.  It's much cleaner and generates far more revenue to have local, state, and federal governments tax completely different things so we don't have to waste time with deductions or be overburdened.

The debate on this continues to be confused by the question of what counts as a tax increase.  The Bush tax cuts are scheduled to expire in little more than a month.  So taxes are already going to go up under current law.  Are any Republicans actually suggesting that taxes go up for anyone above what they're already scheduled to do under current law?  Not as far as I can tell.  Rather, their "softening" on taxes is the suggestion that taxes go up above present rates, but still below what's already scheduled to happen anyway under current law.  And they're only going that far because they figure that Obama will never agree to keep all of the tax rates at Bush levels, and they need him to agree to any kind of deal that preserves any of the tax cuts.

So is what they're proposing a tax increase or a tax cut?  It's semantics, really.
