Congressman Mike McNulty (D) will announce his retirement on Monday, according to the Albany Times-Union. McNulty, 60, was first elected in 1988. From the start, McNulty has regularly won re-election by landslide margins. When veteran Congressman Sam Stratton (D) retired in 1988, McNulty was his anointed successor. Now that McNulty is retiring, Schenectady Mayor Brian Stratton (D) -- Sam's son -- is already being mentioned as a possible candidate for the seat. Stay tuned to see if McNulty attempts to pass the CD-21 baton back to the Stratton family.

I was beginning to think this was never gonna happen.  The Republicans have been hogging all the retirement spotlights.

McNulty is too conservative for that district, so his replacement should be a far more liberal Democrat. So I'm happy.

I would not be at all surprised if Republicans made a serious play for this seat with George Amedore, a wealthy builder who won in an upset special election this summer in a Democratic Assembly seat.  Their problem is that he would likely not get above 45% because heavily Democratic Albany county makes up 58% of the district.  Republicans also likely lose his Assembly seat without him running.

Wow, McNulty is regularly endorsed by the Conservative party. Seeing as his district is more Democratic than nearby Congressman Hinchey's district, it's time to elect a liberal there.

Rep. Michael McNulty (D) confirmed "that he'll retire from Congress after 20 years of representing a seven-county area of eastern New York," the AP reports.

"The 60-year-old Democrat denied rumors that illness is forcing him to step down after 10 terms as representative for the 21st Congressional District, which includes the heavily Democratic Albany-Schenectady-Troy region. He said his health is fine, but acknowledges that effects of the polio he suffered as a child have reduced his stamina and mobility in recent years." In an interview with CQ, McNulty "said he had considered retiring rather than run in 2006. But that election year was marked by a sharp public shift in favor of the Democrats, and it presented him with the best opportunity to return to the majority status he had enjoyed from the time he first won his seat in 1988 until the Republicans surged to control in the 1994 election."
