As much as I want to believe Edwards will ride a wave of liberal enthusiasm to victory, Van Hollen is cleaning up just about every endorsement, even in heavily-black Baltimore and Prince George's County (Edwards' home county), so more than likely Van Hollen. Not an enormous loss for liberals though, if I do recall correctly he is still slightly to the left of Mikulski.

Hopefully, Edwards. Year of woman, anyways, but Van Hollen is the favorite. Hopefully, Prince Cnty come in heavily for Edward, big time.☺

I want Edwards to win, so she'll probably end up losing.

Hope for Van Hollen's win - he is less leftist (though - somewhat to the left of Maryland as a state) and more reasonable.

It's Van Hollen's seat to lose.

I can see a path for Edwards to upset Van Hollen with a grassroots campaign, but yeah, right now it is.....

People always forget how liberal Van Hollen is. Both candidates are DC-area (MoCo vs. PG) and very liberal, even if Edwards is slightly moreso.

I think Van Hollen will be nominated.

Van Hollen will be the nominee because Edwards is running an awful campaign. lijah Cummings has a better chance of winning if he were to run than Edwards.

Van Hollen could definitely snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, but I see it going as a sort of opposite (ideologically) to the 2013 Massachusetts race.

If Edwards were to win, could Maryland be a surprise GOP win, like the Gubernatorial race last year?

Edwards should win as she actually seems to have a mind of her own, but there's no way Van Hollen loses.

Gubernatorial races in midterm years =/= Senate races in presidential years.

And 2014 was a surprise because the polls showed Brown winning, not because it's generally impossible for Republicans to win gubernatorial elections in Maryland.

Disagree at least partially. It's very difficult for Republican to win governorship in Maryland. Before Hogan only Ehrlich (because of disastrous KKT campaign) could do it after Spiro Agnew (who won in 1966 running against open racist Mahoney). In the past, when MD Republican party was more moderate and ran candidates like Theodore McKeldin (yes, he lost for Governor  and Mayor of Baltimore twice, but he won both offices twice as well), it was easier. Now it's much more difficult and, essentially, requires both disastrous Democratic candidate (KKT and Brown), and relatively noncontroversial (no more then pragmatic moderate conservative) candidate on Republican side (both Ehrlich in 2002 and Hogan in 2014 could be classified as that type of candidates)

Fair enough, but it's still to early to say whether a hypothetical future Republican win in Maryland would be a "surprise" on election night the way Hogan's win was. For example, Scott Brown's win in Massachusetts in 2010 was a surprise in the context of Massachusetts politics at the time, but it was generally expected by the time the election happened.

All of you are forgetting Elijah Cummings, who could still run (and would have a fair chance of wining, too)

Possibly.

It should be noted that Anthony Brown did NOT lose because of his race or his issue positions.  He lost because of the unpopularity of outgoing Gov. O'Malley, and because he ran a sloppy, mediocre campaign.
