1948-After a heated election campaign, Republican Thomas Dewey and Vice Presidential candidate Earl Warren defeat President Truman, and VP Alban Barkley. The Dixiecrat Party organizes better, and manages to win a few more states then predicted, as well as elect 12 members of the House of Representatives, and almost win a few seats in the Senate. Progressive Henry Wallace fails to break 2%, but raises awareness on civil rights issues.

President Harry Truman/Vice President Alben Barkley-205 EV, 45.44% of the PV.
Senator Strom Thurmond/Governor Fielding Wright-205 E, 6% of the PV.
Former Vice PresidentHenry Wallace/Senator Glen Taylor-1%

President Dewey was inaugurated, and soon went to work. By 1950, his reconstruction program had rebuilt the economy of Western Europe, and curbed the Soviet influence in war ravaged Greece, and Yugoslavia.

In 1950, midterms go well. War in Korea brakes out. US troops were called to battle, and in less then a year, had pushed the North Koreans back to the Yalu. However, China intervened, and the region became a hell. Under Secretary of Defense Eisenhower's advice, nuclear weapons were not used. The Chinese agreed to withdrawl, if the US and French would leave Vietnam. As a result, Korea united under capitalism, and Vietnam fell into a disastrous civil war.

In 1952, Democrats were eager to retake the White House. At a divided convention, Adlai Stevenson, and Joesph Kennedy Senior were nominated, over Former President Truman, and Estes Kefauver. The only challenge President received at the Republican convention, was from Ohio Senator Robert Taft, who conceded the nomination on the 2nd ballot, and endorsed the President.

After winning re-election, President Dewey pushed a Civil Rights Bill. He eventually got the Civil Rights Act of 1957, which de-segregated many schools within the South. In 1956, freshman Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater announced he would run for President. He was followed by Governor Christian Herter, of Massachusetts and Vice President Earl Warren. Finnally, at the convention, Vice President Warren won the nomination.

At the Democratic convention, it took 1 ballot to nominate Adlai Stevenson again, with Estes Kefauver being nominated for Vice President. Strom Thurmond did not seek the States Rights Party nomination, and many abandonned the Party. At their convention, they nominated Fielding Wright, and Senator Harry Byrd.

Vice President Earl Warren/Governor Christian Herter-372 EV, 51% of the PV.
Governor Fielding Wright/Senator Harry Byrd-81 EV, 29% of the PV
Senator Adlai Stevenson/Senator Estes Kefauver-78 EV, 20% of the PV

President-Elect Warren would go on to be the 35th President, but will the expansion of communism, the Civil Rights movement, and the rise of the Kennedys hurt his chances?

Yes Smiley

Just one thing. Joe Kennedy's political career as a possible candidate himself died in 1940, after his infamous interview. No way he'd ever be on the national ticket.

I remebered that after I posted it-consider it changed.

In 1958, the Presidents popularity was low. The Cuban Civil War had turned violent fast, and within months, it would be controlled by pro Castro forces. In Haiti, dictator Francois Duvalier has turned drasticly against the US, and courts the Soviet Union. In Africa, the process of de-colonization begins, and fears of Communist takeover are ripe in the remaining colonies.

Early in 1960, Senator John Kennedy,Senator Lyndon Johnson, Senator Stuart Symington,Senator Lyndon Johnson, and Senator Hubert Humphrey all declare there intentions for the Democratic nomination. At the convention, John Kennedy is nominated, and he picks Senator George Smathers as his runnning mate.

Republicans nominate President Warren, and VP Herter once again. The States Rights Party nominates Fielding Wright and Alabama Governor John Patterson.

The campaign focuses on Civil Rights. President Warren tries to push a moderate measure to appeal to Southernors, however, he losses much of their support in the process. Kennedy takes a moderate path as well, appealing to unite the Democratic Party, and kill off the States Rights Party. By election day, polling shows a Kennedy lead by 10%.

Senator John Kennedy/Senator George Smathers-331 EV, 49% of the PV
President Earl Warren/Vice President Christian Herter-187 EV, 41% of the PV
Former Governor Fielding Wright/Governor John Patterson-19 EV, 10% of the PV

And I obivously need help with map codes Smiley. Can someone help me with that?

The First Term of President Kennedy started rough, with the deployment of troops to Cuba, where a full blown civil war had broken out. President Batista finally took control in early 1962. The President also was challenged by the Soviet Union, which led to a nuclear standoff in Europe. The Middle East had its second Arab-Isreali war in 1961, which led to Syria, Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan being defeated by the young Israeli nation.

The President was injured in a assassination attempt while campaigning for re-election in Texas. The assailant was Lee Harvey Oswald, who was arrested days later. His motives were never fully clear, and he died in prison in 1979.

In Africa, the independence movement was taking full swing. And in Indochina, the Communist finnally took over South Vietnam and Cambodia. Kennedys approval ratings fell, but remained at a steady 49% in August, of 1964.

The first Republican to declare was Senator Richard Nixon, of California. He was followed by New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, and former Vice President Christian Herter. Sbnator Nixon won the nomination, and selected Pennsylvania governor William Scranton as his running mate.

President John Kennedy/Vice President George Smathers-403 EV, 57% of the PV.
Senator Richard Nixon/Governor William Scranton-135 EV, 42% of the PV
Others (States Rights, Socialist Workers,Progressive)-0 EV, 1% of the PV

President Kennedy began his second term. He focused on Civil Rights, and finnally passed the Civil Rights Bill in 1965, as well as the creation of the Department of Housing and Urban Devolpment, the Walter Quality Act, the Immigration Act, and finnally, the failed National Health Insurance Act. The President declined a third term in 1968, but campaigned for his brother Robert to be elected Governor of Rhode Island in 1968.

In early 1968, there were four major Democrat canidates vying for the nomination. They included Dixecrat leader, and Alabama Governor George Wallace, Senator Hubert Humphrey, Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson, and Vice President Smathers. While Humphrey and Wallace won the primaries, it was at a divided and violent convention that George Smathers won the nomination. He selected Hubert Humphrey as his running mate.

On the Republican side, the convention was also heated. Senator Richard Nixon seeked the nomination once more, but failed to gain traction anywhere in the primary. Conservatives and Libertarians supported Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, and moderates favored New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller. On the second ballot, Barry Goldwater edged out Rockefeller, and choose California Governor Ronald Reagan as his running mate. George Wallace publicly endorsed the ticket.

New York had a Senate race in 1968 that Bobby would be able to run for.
Oh-I forgot about that. Bobby Kennedy is stuck in Rhode Island then. Actually, I like the idea of changing where he is from, Rhode Island deserves a major fiigure, and John Chafee doesnt make the cut!

In 1970, the midterm results drasticly show Americans are tired of the Democratic Party. Republicans, led by Gerald Ford, take the House and almost take the Senate. They block several of the Presidents programs in Congress, and in 1971, a budget battle leads to a government shutdown. Moderate Republicans take advantage of the situation, and push Nelson Rockefellers canidacy for President in 1972.

The President faced only a mild challenge from Senator George McGovern, who later formed the New Progressive Party in August, of 1972. The Republican primaries were a battle between Governor Ronald Reagan, and Governor Nelson Rockefeller. Polls fell against the Conservatives, and at the Republican convention, Nelson Rockefeller was nominated. He chose Speaker Ford to be his running mate.

On election day, Rockefeller was victorious, but Shirley Chishom made history, being the first African American woman to receive electoral votes. The McGovern/Chisholm ticket won Washington DC by a 5% margin, but the "New Progressive Party" made no gains in Congress.

Governor Nelson Rockefeller/Speaker Gerald Ford-270 EV, 52% of the PV
President George Smathers/Vice President Hubert Humphrey-265 EV, 47% of the PV
Senator George McGovern/Congresswoman Shirly Chisholm-3 EV, 1% of the PV

I forgot to fix Texas-no Rockefeller would barely win Texas, if he did at all! Sorry, I presssed the post button and had to finish part of the timeline. The New Progressive Party was a short lived movement, but it will have a impact on 1976, and 1980......

President Rockefellers first term was fairly sucessfull. In 1973, a American won the space-race, and put a Man on the Moon. The US deployed peacekeepers in Vietnam, where all but Saigon had fallen to Communist, and in Cuba, Batistas regime was coming to a close. The condition the economy enjoyed, was less stable. Un-employment, and inflation were slowly rising. The Presidents relations with Conservatives were not good, and California Senator Ronald Reagan was considering launching a primary challenge. Vice President Ford did not seek a second term, and as a branch to Conservatives, President Rockefeller asked Senator Reagan to be his running mate.

The Democratic Primary started as a four way battle, with Governor Robert Kennedy, Senator Henry Jackson, Represenative Mo Udall, and Senator Lloyd Bentsen. At the Democratic convention, Robert Kennedy was nominated. He asked Senator Lloyd Bentsen to be his running mate. The New Progressive Party renamed itself the "Peoples Party". They focused on the Congressional races, mainly, but renominated George McGovern, and Shirley Chisholm as there ticket.

President Nelson Rockefeller/Senator Ronald Reagan-287 EV, 49.40% of the PV
Governor Robert Kennedy/Senator Lloyd Bentsen-248 EV, 45.30% of the PV
Senator George McGovern/Shirley Chisholm-3 EV, 6.20% of the PV
The Peoples Party won DC again, and managed to take 25 seats in the House of Represenatives.

There's one more problem. When Biden was elected in 1972, he was just short of 30, which is minimum age for a Senator to serve. In 1976, he would be 34 in November.

35 is a constitutional minimum for both President and Vice President.

Dang-that explains why he didnt run in 76, I was thinking about that for a whole another timeline. I will change that problem.

Rockefellers second term was rougher than his first. In 1978, the price of Gas rose dramaticly, after the US supported Israel in a 4th war against Egypt. Inflation would not go down, and unemployment was on the rise. The stress was too much for the President. On December 26th, 1978, President Rockefeller retired to the Oval Office to spend the evening working. The next morning he was found slumped over his desk, dead of a heart attack. Later in the afternoon, VP Reagan was sworn in as President.

President Reagan announced he would seek the GOP nomination that year. However, he faced a series of challenges, including Former VP Ford, Senator George Bush, Senator Bob Dole, and Congressman Phil Crane. President Reagan won a majority of the primaries, and asked Congressman John Anderson to be his running mate, to appease the moderate faction.

The Democratic Primaries were also hectic, with Senator Lloyd Bentsen eventually defeating Governor Robert Kennedy, Senator Robert Byrd,Senator Henry Jackson, and Former Governor James Carter. After a series of wins, cultivating at the California Primary, Lloyd Bentsen was nominated as the Democratic nominee. He chose Governor James Carter as his running mate.

The Peoples Party primary was also chaotic, with George McGovern and Shirley Chisholm both deciding against a run. They nominated Benjamin Spock, a activist from California. Former Congressman Pete McCloskey was his running mate.

Senator Lloyd Bentsen/Governor James Carter-274 EV, 46% of the PV
President Ronald Reagan/Congressman John Anderson-241 EV, 44% of the PV
Activist Ben Spock/Former Congressman Pete McCloskey-23 EV, 10% of the PV
The Peoples Party won a greater share of seats in the House of Represenatives, and managed to take 3 seats in the US Senate. They also came in second place in California, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin during the Presidential election.

During Bentsens first term, the US economy stabilized. The Soviet Union would go through its first cracks, with protest in Moscow being suppressed, and later, a series of strikes throughout the UK that ended Margeret Thatchers government. The President enjoyed a popularity boast after a failed assassination attempt.

By 1983, employment was up, and inflation was down. Few Republicans wanted to challenge the popular President, and Former VP Gerald Ford won the nomination hands down. He asked Senator Bob Dole to be his running mate.

The Peoples Party nominated former Senator Fred Harris, whose wife, LaDonna Harris, was Chairwomen of the Party. He asked Former Senator Eugene McCarthy to be his running mate. The Ticket received a large amount of support, and polled as high as 20%

President Bentsen and VP James Carter were renominated without issue. As the election came, some Democrats feared they would lose re-election, with the Peoples Party divideing the ticket.

President Lloyd Bentsen/VP James Carter-310 EV, 43% of the PV
Former VP Gerald Ford/Senator Bob Dole-169 EV, 39% of the PV
Former Senator Fred Harris/Former Senator Eugene McCarthy-60 EV, 16% of the PV

President Bentsens second term was a time of economic prosperity. In Nicaragua, the Contra's, a anti Communist group, beat the Communist Sandista's in a drawn out civil war. In the US, Employment was at a all time high, and the budget was close to being balanced. Taxes were lowered, adding to the Presidents approval rating.

As 1988 approached, Republicans were eager to retake the White House. The Peoples Party was also eager to make a splash, and continue the successful growth they enjoyed. Vice President Carter did not seek the Democratic nomination, and the field was wide open.

The Republican primaries were contested by Senator Bob Dole, Senator George Bush, Senator Howard Baker, Governor George Deukmejian, and Congressman John Anderson. The Iowa Primary was a win for Bush, who carried on in New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Super Tuesday, eventually crushing his closest rival, Senator Baker, at the Convention. He chose California Senator Pete Wilson as his running mate.

The Democratic campaign turned into a war between Senator Gary Hart, and Governor Bill Clinton. After a divided set of primaries, Senator Hart defeated Clinton, and asked Senator Joseph Biden of Delaware to be his running mate.

The Peoples Party Convention was held in San Diego, where Jesse Jackson was nominated. He chose Eugene McCarthy to be the Vice Presidential nominee, and he accepted.

Senator Gary Hart/Senator Joe Biden-263 EV, 45% of the PV
Senator George Bush/Senator Pete Wilson-206 EV, 35% of the PV
Reverend Jesse Jackson/Former Senator Eugene McCarthy-69 EV,20% of the PV

No candidate ended up getting the 270 vote majority, and as a result, the Democratic House was forced to decide the election. A election held brought the ticket of Senator Gary Hart and Joe Biden to the White House.

The controversy of the 1988 election subsided, but the effect the Peoples Party had damaged them in the 1990 Congressional elections. 15 Peoples Party Representatives lost reelection, and Republicans took over the House of Representatives.

In 1992, a powerfull movement was started by Texas Billionaire Ross Perot. He formed the Reform Party, and announced a third party campaign for the Presidency. In most polls, he trailed President Hart, but had a lead over the generic Republican and Peoples nominee.
He asked former Admiral James Stockdale to be his running mate.

On the Republican field, the largest candidate was Governor Pete Wilson, though activist Alan Keyes, Texas Congressman Ron Paul, Senator Robert Dole, and Senator Orin Hatch were all candidates. Wilson trounced all of them in the primaries, and easily won the nomination. He asked New York Representative Jack Kemp to be his running mate. Only far Left Radio Host, Dennis Kucinich challenged Hart in the primaries. Hart and Biden easily were renominated.

The Peoples Party nominated the Mayor of Irvine California, Larry Agran. He asked Dennis Kucinich to be his running mate.

President Gary Hart/Vice President Joe Biden-324 EV, 51% of the PV.
Governor Pete Wilson/Congressman Jack Kemp-207 EV, 35% of the PV.
Ross Perot/Admiral James Stockdale-4 EV,12% of the PV.
Mayor Larry Argan/Dennis Kucinich-3 EV, 2% of the PV.
The Peoples Party suffered a serious defeat, with a new movement bursting on the scene. While the President celebrated re-election, Republicans readied themselves for a re-capture of the White House.

The 1994 midterm elections brought Republicans to power in Congress. Newt Gingrich was elevated to the Speakership. The President and the Speaker would battle eachother on every issue, leading to a government shutdown. The result was 40% approval ratings for President Hart.

In August, of 1995, both Ross Perot and VP Biden announced they would not run for the Presidency. The Democratic field was wide open, until Attorney General Bill Clinton announced his campaign. He easily beat Lyndon LaRouche, and other fringe challengers for the nomination, and asked Tom Harkin, of Iowa, to be his running mate.

The Republican Primary was a battle between Ohio Senator George Voinovich, Representative Jack Kemp, and Senator John McCain. After a heated primary season, Senator McCain was nominated. He asked General Collin Powell to be his running mate.

The Peoples Party Convention nominated Congressman Ralph Nader. Congressman Nader then asked his biggest rival for the nomination, the Reverend Al Sharpton to be his running mate. He declined (later being nominated by the minor African American Freddom Party) so the Party asked Activist Winona LaDuke to be his running mate.

Senator John McCain/General Collin Powell-271 EV, 40% of the PV.
Congressman Ralph Nader/Activist Winona LaDuke-145 EV, 39% of the PV.
Attorney General Bill Clinton/Governor Tom Harkin-122 EV, 21% of the PV.

The Second Term of John McCain was a success. He managed to balance the budget, and successfully ended crises in the Balkans, and Middle East. Taxes were low, and unemployment sat around 4%. The conditions set for re-election were favorable.

The Democratic Primaries were a 5 way battle, with Former Attorney General Bill Clinton, Senator Evan Bayh, Senator Paul Wellstone, Senator John Kerry, and Senator Al Gore. The primaries were close, but Attorney General Clinton once more achieved the Democratic nomination. He asked Paul Wellstone to be his running mate.

The Peoples Party nominated Winona LaDuke. She, however, asked radical activist Leonora Fulani to be her running mate. The ticket caused some members to walk out, and runner up for the nomination, Al Sharpton, again was nominated by the minor African American Freedom Party. Republicans easily nominated McCain and Powell, with a minor challenge by former Lousiana Governor Buddy Roemor.

President John McCain/Vice President Collin Powell-301 EV, 49% of the PV
Former Attorney General Bill Clinton/Senator Paul Wellstone-234 EV, 40% of the PV
Activist Winona LaDuke/Activist Leonora Fulani-3 EV, 11% of the PV.

The US was stable, until the September 11 terror attacks. Almost 4,000 Americans died when Islamic terrorist crashed planes into the World Trade Center, and the Pentagon. The World Trade Center collapsed, and a fourth plane, targeting the Capital, White House, or possibly even the Supreme Court, crashed over West Virginia. The US launched a invasion of Afghanistan, dismantled the Taliban regime, and unsuccessfully hunted Osama Bin Laden and other top Al Qaeda leaders.

The 2004 Republican Primary season was largely uncontested, with uninspiring campaigns by Senator Orin Hatch, Senator Richard Lugar, and Florida Governor Jeb Bush. Collin Powelll won every primary, and easily won the Republican nomination. He asked Senator Lincoln Chafee to be his running mate.

The Peoples Party nominated Former Congressman Ralph Nader again, and he asked Vermont Governor Howard Dean to be his running mate. The Democratic primary was also very dull, with Former VP Joe Biden being the only canidate. He easilly defeated his challenger, Evan Bayh, for the nomination, though Bayh won Iowa and South Carolina's primaries.

Former Vice President Joe Biden/Senator Bob Graham-272 EV, 40% of the PV.
Vice President Collin Powell/Senator Lincoln Chafee-193 EV, 31% of the PV.
Congressman Ralph Nader/Governor Howard Dean-73 EV, 29% of the PV.

The Biden years entered a rough start. Casualties began to mount in Afghanistan, and in 2006, the US economy began to faulter. His term remained rather dull, up until 2007. On March 3rd, Islamic Terrorist struck the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia, detonating a car bomb killing 47 Americans, and injuring the Ambassador. In December, the US Markets suffered a financial meltdown. The government gave unpopular bailouts to AIG, GMC, Lehman Brothers, and nationalized Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Bidens approval ratings were in the low forties by election day.

Despite being the front runner in most polls, former VP Collin Powell refused to run. The field was wide open, with Governor Jeb Bush, Governor Bob Riley, Senator Haley Barbor, Governor Mitt Romney, Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and Congressman Ron Paul. After a heated primary season, Senator Barbor won the nomination, and asked Governor Tim Pawlenty to be his running mate.

Well thats the end for this TL-I am debating a RFK in 68, or a Gore in 2000. They will be a little more detailed, and will focus on the Presidents terms, and a little bit afterword.

I'm also considering a bio timeline, with Anne Frank. Basically, Otto and Edith move to the US after a series of pogroms, and starts his Jam company in the US. Anne Frank is born, goes to colledge, briefly flirts with Socialism, but enjoys a drastic change to a Libertarian Conservative throughout the 70's. Then she runs for elected office, and later, the Presidency.
