I really had to think about what SSM was.

Do people actually use that acronym?

That's fine, but the fact that McCaskill is behind Rob Portman on this issue is a little bit disheartening i'm sure for Democrats, but I think this is a part of a tidal wave that is coming.

I wonder if Joe Manchin will ever announce a shift on this issue.

It's probably not going to be until 10 Republicans announce in favor of gay marriage.

And it's not just that. Not only is she behind Portman on the issue, she's also flagrantly doing it for political benefit, rather than for some deep, personal realignment.

Makes sense that she wouldn't do it before her senate election.  I guess she figures that in 6 years, Missouri will be onboard as well.

It could help her with the Senate Democrats, potentially.  A leadership position, maybe?

I don't think this will hurt her in 2018, though.  She probably supported it for a while but chose to wait until after the election to make it public.

A good sign, hopefully others follow her lead.

What lead? she's following Hillary, Obama, Huntsman, and Portman!

41/53 Democrats in the Senate now support gay marriage. The bulk that haven't made the announcement are from swing/Republican states, although there are some odd hold-outs (Tom Carper for one).

Oh Claire, I'm glad to see you have wizened up on this issue!

I don't know why I like her... I'm fairly sure it's just her folksy accent... but this makes me has a happy.

Carper is definitely on the list of Democrats who should be primaried.

Carper was just re-elected and isn't up for re-election til 2018. Seems more likely Beau Biden runs for Governor in 2016.

I prefer to believe in the slightly less cynical explanation that she's privately held the view for some time and is just now taking the stance publicly now that it's politically feasible to do.

Don't want to give President Obama too much, but he does score points for coming out in favor of marriage equality prior to the 2012 election. And yes I believe this was all planned to happen before the election, even if Biden made it happen sooner than later. I feel it very important for him to do it BEFORE his last election ever.
