Why would someone bump a thread that's nearly a year old?

Wayne, MI

Because its a poor, crime-ridden, just downright depressing area in America (mostly because of Detroit).

Either Kalawao County, HI or one of the Native American counties in South Dakota (Buffalo, Shannon, etc.).

Berkshire, MA?

If not anywhere in VT, NH, or ME would be it.

Really hard to pick one.  For my money, it's one of two types of county.  It's either:

One of the many flat, barren rectangles on the Western plains.  Really any place that is flat, largely uninhabited and far from actual civilization.  That type of place gives you both a dearth of human contact and culture and a general lack of natural beauty.  Counties in western Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas probably would all qualify.

Some super isolated place in Alaska.  You would have the advantage of natural beauty, but the negative of being a long, long trip to civilization.  At least in western Kansas, you could drive to Denver.  In Western Alaska, you probably have to mush sled dogs, fly in a sea plane and sail a deadliest catch boat just to find a movie theater.

For my state it would be Holmes County. Nothing but far right Evangelicals, Mennonites and Amish. The countryside is overrated and it is extremely difficult to drive through if you ever have the unfortunate privilege of a trip.

Nationwide too many to count probably.

Loving, TX.  It's one of those "flat, barren rectangles" with the added handicap of being a) in Texas, and b) so small as to make a mockery of the idea of the "county" as a sensible level of government.

Dishonorable mention to any of a number of exurban fundie hotbeds in the South; Montgomery TX comes to mind in particular but there are many options here.

Several Horrible Counties exist.  I'm just going to name a few of them.

Maricopa, AZ
Clark, NV
Riverside, CA
Orange, CA
Orange, FL
Duval, FL
Shelby, AL
Rankin, MS
Any county in Greater Houston or DFW, TX

I'm not a fan of hot weather, tacky tourist traps, sprawl, or right-wing politics (though not all counties that I listed vote Republican anymore).

I was pondering this again, and I have to add in Randolph County, NC. Just unpleasant Greensboro tea party exurbia.

I once went on a school trip there and a giraffe bit me.

How did that happen?
