After the DNC in which Pres. Ford trailed in the popular vote by 33 points, he substantially cut into Carter's lead throughout the rest of the summer and into the fall.  Only the "Eastern Europe" comment slowed the momentum.  Then, in the final few weeks, Ford gained a second wind and nearly overtook Carter in the popular vote and likely won a few additional states in the electoral college that he otherwise may have lost.  Given the President's momentum in the final weeks, had the election taken place say two weeks later, does Pres. Ford find a way to victory? It only would have taken a combination of OH/WI, or OH/HI/MS, or simply NY to put him over the top.

I think the map would look like this:

I think Ford would only get New York and maybe Ohio.

Is it really necessary to reply 5 times in a row?

I think the likeliest scenario in which Ford would win is where he carries all the states where he won IRL, along with Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Ford catches up and wins even if it were only a week later. In the actual vote Ohio was razor thin close he would have only needed one other state. Wisconsin, Mississippi or Hawaii.  Ford was a very moderate republican had it not been for the taint of Watergate he would have easily beaten Carter. Had I been able to vote and alive during that election my vote would have gone to Ford as did my state at the time. The momentum clearly was with Ford in the final days of 76 he just closed very late in the game and didnt completely close the gap. This was very similar to 1968 if Humphrey would have had another week he would have beaten Nixon.
