So what's next for the Ontario Liberals after that catastrophic defeat?  At some point they will have to through a process of renewal and a race for the permanent leadership.  Will they pick one of their remaining caucus members, such as Michael Coteau or Mitzie Hunter and "make history" with a Black leader (their caucus is 2/7 Black).  Could Yasir Naqvi run for leader and run in one of the two Ottawa seats that proved to be the "safest" for the Liberals?  A federal MP go for it?  Sandra Pupatello has also expressed interest - and she may have some appeal among two demographics that went to Ford big time in this election: 905 "blue" Liberals and Italian Canadians (though it's a tall order to make the Liberals competitive in Windsor again!)

The OLP caucus:

Marie France-Lalonde (Orleans)
Nathalie Des Rosiers (Ottawa-Vanier)
John Fraser (Ottawa South)
Mitzie Hunter (Scarborough-Guildwood)
Michael Coteau (Don Valley East)
Kathleen Wynne (Don Valley West)
Michael Gravelle (Thunder Bay-Superior North)

^ It's such a short list I was able to compile it from memory!

When I said two safest, I meant Ottawa-Vanier and Ottawa South where the Liberals won by more than 10 percentage points.  Only one of these is held by a Franco-Ontarian.

57% of the OLP caucus also have first names that start with "M."  And 29% are named Michael.

(And if Colle in Eglinton-Lawrence - the highest polling Liberal that did not prevail - had survived those figures would have been 62.5% and 33.3% respectively).

I wonder what the likelihood of Michael Coteau or Mitzie Hunter jumping to federal politics is.

Maybe we'll see some sort of return to Ontario ca. 1990 with the NDP dominating the urban and "progressive" vote and the Liberals becoming the center-right party of the suburbs?   Maybe that's Del Duca's best hope.

Steve Paikin has commented that Del Duca is the first person with an Italian surname (though not Italian ancestry - that would be Patrick Brown) to lead a provincial party.  It was not well received given that Del Duca beat two Black candidates, three women and an Asian man.

Does the "Italian vote" exist in 2020 Ontario?

And two Ontario finance ministers: Sorbara and Fedeli.

They just haven't reached Mayor of Toronto and Premier of Ontario.
