California since 1992 (both Jewish and female).
I keep forgetting about this small piece of trivia. How come Boxer and Feinstein are the only Jewish women to have ever been in the Senate? I mean, didn't a whole bunch of Jewish women like Shelley Berkley, Linda Lingle, and Elizabeth Holtzman run for office so far?
Berkley had a ton of ethics issues, Lingle did as well as a Republican senate candidate could do in Hawaii, and Holtzman would win in today's New York. I can't recall any other Jewish women candidates of note.
There's Nancy Meyer (going off of the name) who challenged Jack Reed in 1996, Jill Docking (?) who challenged Sam Brownback in the 1990s. Plus, there's one that ran against Kit Bond and John Danforth in the 1980s and another one that ran against Kit Bond in the 1990s. I guess I can throw in Barbara Ann Radnofsky from Texas despite the reason being obvious.
I guess it's relatively easy for a woman or a minority to become a lieutenant governor, but the difficulty level is higher when running for governor or for the senate.
Nita Lowey could have been the first woman senator from NY.
