It's not the Democratic label being toxic. It's about the idiots down there running people like an ex-convict or a Venezuelan national and a Missouri resident for winnable races and punting completely without a fight.

I mean I care about Florida probably more than any other state party since I will probably end up living there. A lack of resources isn't an excuse for pitiful performance. It's more likely a symptom of trash leadership. Other states in redder territory have their sh!t together better than this.

I live in SoFlo and even here, in the bluest part of the state, local Dem party organization basically doesn't exist. It's pretty frustrating.

This is rather embarrassing for Florida Dems though. They have yet to overperform in a special to date, and I'm pretty sure that's the only state they're consistently underperforming Clinton in. They should just fire their whole leadership and bring in the people who run Virginia Democratic Party.

Cannot believe I'm going to go to bat for the FDP here, but. The FDP has only attempted to contest two races this year, the St. Pete mayoral election and the special election in Senate District 40 in southwestern Dade. In both, they faced two candidates who were much better fits for their electorates than Trump was: in St. Pete, that was popular former two-term Mayor Rick Baker, while in SD-40 it was State Rep. José Félix Díaz, whose state house district overlapped with much of SD-40. Conventional wisdom was that they'd lose both; they won both.

In HD-58 specifically, Democrats made a major effort to recruit former Plant City Mayor John Dicks. Dicks declined to run and, with no other credible candidates willing to run, the FDP wisely decided to punt on the race and save their (very limited) money.

Why no credible candidate wanted to run? It's not like this was an unwinnable district, and if you don't run now with such a pro-Dem environment then when?

There is also a D v D race in Connecticut House District 15.

Georgia SD-17 should be safe R, as it voted 57-41 Trump. HD-111 on the other hand could be the first Democratic pickup of the year. It voted 50-47 Clinton and I would rate lean D under the current environment.

SD-17 is a suburban seat and Democrats have picked up much redder turf. There will be probably a runoff and the Democratic candidate is running a serious campaign (she has been endorsed by John Lewis) so safe R is probably undeservedly favorable towards the Rs.

Silvey's (Missouri SD 17) appointment to the Public Service Commission opens up an extremely competitive 49-45 Trump and 51-46 Romney district in the KC suburbs. Definitely a toss up in this environment, especially considering how well Shields did in the 8th, also in the KC suburbs.
