President Barack Obama (D-IL): 333
Gov. Goldwater (R-WA): 205

Goldwater does better than the average Republican in New England, but does worse in the Midwest, excepting Wisconsin and Iowa (the latter of which he wins narrowly, and nearly wins Wisconsin, losing the state following a recount) and does better in the Pacific Northwest. Presenting himself as the "candidate of legalization" in Colorado helps him defeat the President there thanks to ticket-splitting on the part of upper income white voters. Goldwater does worse in the deep south than Romney, but does about the same as he did in the upper south, winning those states by smaller margins, due to his libertarianism. Obama manages a win in Missouri after two recounts there, and carries Indiana once again. Goldwater becomes the first Republican to pick up one of Maine's congressional districts, and also carries New Hampshire in a close race.

The centrist wing of the Democratic Party, unhappy with President Obama's chances following the 2010 midterm blowout, successfully convince Governor-elect Scott of Connecticut to consider a presidential bid against the incumbent in the upcoming primaries. Young, energetic and supported by the party's fiscal conservatives and it's social liberals (many of whom are upset with Obama for his stances on civil liberties, marriage equality, and tepidness on abortion rights), the Governor announces a bid for the Democratic nomination in July 2011 to the chagrin of the White House.

Though Obama is favored in the outset, continued weak economic results combined with left and right wing fatigue among fellow Democrats allows Governor Scott to outmaneuver the President with a victory in the New Hampshire primary. Building from there, Scott manages to wrap up the nomination and force the President out of the race by June 2012.

Governor Scott announces former Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal as his running mate shortly before the Democratic convention. Going into the general election, the likeable Scott prevails over the robotic Romney in the debates, while his running-mate successfully dispatches Congressman Paul Ryan. In the end, the election turns out to be a wash for the Democratic Party, which gains seats in the Senate and comes close to winning back control of the House of Representatives.

Gary Johnson performs much better than he did IOTL here, tipping Indiana, Montana, and Alaska into Gov. Scott's column.

Governor Goldwater (R-Wash.) successfully rallies anti-Romney forces in the Republican Party after winning endorsements from Newt Gingrich (satisfied with his political appeal), Rick Santorum (satisfied with his foreign policy positions), and Ron Paul (satisfied with his economic policy positions).

Heading into the general election, Governor Goldwater chooses as his running-mate Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown, who decides against running for re-election there.

Obama-Biden manages a 302-236 win over Goldwater-Brown.

Organized labor has a hard time turning out for a guy to the right of Obama on major policy issues, which ultimately dooms Sen. Scott's candidacy in the upper Midwest, allowing for a close Romney victory.
