The discussion whether he would have beat Carter or not had he received the nomination or not was already proposed. I don't think he would have crushed Carter like he did in 1980 but in my opinion Reagan would have emerged the victor in 1976 since most people weren't any smarter then than in 1980.

Anyway, the question here is, what would have happened had Reagan become president in 1980? How would Reaganomics have worked at the beginnings of the oil crisis? How would he have handled the Iran Hostage Crisis? The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan?
Would George H.W. Bush have been vice-president? If so, would he have sought the presidency in 1984? If not, who would have? Go on as far as you can.

I don't know that Reagan would have won, but if he did, it certainly wouldn't have been a blowout.

And no Reagan coattails means no GOP Senate. He wouldn't have been able to get much done.

It was Richard Schweiker; he was a Representative that represented much of what today is PA-13.  :-)

He also became Secretary of HHS during Reagan's first term.  This might have been enough to swing PA and DE to the GOP and give 1976 to the GOP.

People thought Reagan was a right-wing extremist reactionary. He only won because Carter was a miserable failure, just like FDR.

I knew it was something like that.

As much as Democrats like to bash Reagan, almost everything he signed was passed by a Democratic House.

**edited**

Just because Reagan passed certain bills doesn't mean he wasn't a failure.

FDR a failure. Hmm; only a GOP'er could make such a deluded claim.

WTF? I was saying Reagan only won because Carter was a miserable failure, JUST LIKE FDR only won because his opponent was a miserable failure.

Sorry, sounded like you said FDR was a failure. I think simple logic didtates that if you look at FDR's record, he was anything but a failure. Since that isn't what you said, I'll edit my post Smiley
