Whereas one year ago, it might have seemed that Hillary's best pick would be a boring center-left white guy like Tim Kaine, it is becoming increasingly apparent that issues like income inequality are going to be the next major political issues. Even Republicans are talking about them. Hillary won't be running as a Southern dixiecrat like Bill did, so Kaine goes out the window (along with Warner, Beshear, Schweitzer, McCaskill, etc.), she'll be running as Bernie Lite, even if she won't deliver on that.

A veep pick who resonates with the progressive base will most probably be her no. 2. They also have to be young. Most likely the veep pick will be male. And they might be nonwhite, but this is not assured.
