with people instead of wallowing in being the biggest ego in the room, he couldn't do much to hype his brand or his net worth, he'd have a frightening amount of responsibility and accountability, and he'd likely go down in history as a hated failure.
If he flames out spectacularly now, he can blame "the establishment" and even keep on hyping "Make America Great Again" as a cash-cow, for free PR, try to redeem his name and his brand, and wield a sizable amount of influence on the national stage. He can even mount a pro-forma (aka. he doesn't pay much) 3rd party run for the lolz without any real danger of winning.
