I'm probably wrong, but I'll guess percentage of people native to the state who live there?

It's not quite the year that the state reached it's max population (otherwise all the states would be purple) but in concrete terms, it is basically this.

It's not quite the year that the state reached it's max population (otherwise all the states would be purple) but in concrete terms, it is basically this.
Relative to US, n'est pas?

Colors represent census years, going from 1790 (red) to 2010 (purple). So orange-yellow are basically early 19th century, shades of green are late 19th, and blue is mid-20th.
