Sol, you're almost there! Smiley

It's not quite the year that the state reached it's max population (otherwise all the states would be purple) but in concrete terms, it is basically this.

The year that the state reached its most electoral votes.

Date when the state reached its highest percentage of the national population.

This one is so easy I don't even know why I made it.

Plurality religion.

Blue = Catholic
Red = Baptist
Yellow = Lutheran
Grey = LDS
Green = Methodist, maybe?

You got it!

(Alaska is the only green state not plurality Methodist.  I believe that state is plurality 'Other.')

Posted this a while back, but I don't remember anybody guessing.

Isn't it the year each state had it's highest percentage of the total U.S. population? At least, that's what I guessed when you last posted it. And I think you said I was right. Tongue

Relative to US, n'est pas?

Got it! Great game. Wink

Colors represent census years, going from 1790 (red) to 2010 (purple). So orange-yellow are basically early 19th century, shades of green are late 19th, and blue is mid-20th.

Percent of the population living in urbanized areas?  (Or, perhaps, metropolitan areas instead?)

Political Party loyalty over presidential election history? Dark = Party diversity. Light = Party loyalty?

Close enough. It's actually percent of the population living in urban areas. Urbanized areas are urban areas with a population of at least 50,000, while urban areas are densely-populated settlements of at least 2,500 people. If this map was of urbanized areas, several states (such as Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakotas) would be several shades lighter.

Yeah, I meant to say "urban" rather than urbanized; also wasn't sure about how the different definitions might impact some of the shades, which I couldn't perfectly tell apart (esp. between 40% and 50%).  I happened to remember that Maine was the most rural state in the Union, followed by Vermont, Mississippi, and West Virginia- four states with so little else in common demographically.  So when they popped out as the lightest shades, I knew it had to be something like that.

No, then Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Virginia would be colored.
