If Elizabeth Edwards dies around, say, the end of 2007, how does that effect John's presidential run?  Does he drop out or does he see sympathy propel him to the nomination?

He'd probably suspend campaigning for a while and then keep going. If he dropped out it might increase the odds of him being offered and him accepting a veep spot. If he stays in, then yes, he would get a boost in support, but I don't think it would single-handedly propel him to the nomination.
