During WWII, hamburgers in the U.S. were dubbed “Liberty Steaks” to avoid the German-sounding name.c

Burger (and many variants) is a common German last name.

I believe they were actually called Salisbury Steaks... and the name did stick to a similar dish which is more like the traditional hamburger... of a ground beef patty seasoned and covered in gravy and often mushrooms and served with mashed potatoes and a veggie of some sort.

Interestingly, because of the animosity towards German immigrants during WWI, German-Americans had embraced assimilation and by WWII there wasn't much anti-German sentiment... by that point they were simply "Americans"... and they remain probably the most assimilated of any traditional white immigrant group outside of the English.

Indeed, German culture in the US is (virtually) non-existent despite it being the top ethnic group.

Maybe, but it seems like literally everyone I meet must tell me about his 37.5% German heritage. Smiley

I'm only 50% German, but I've got a 100% German name.

The same thing the Americans did when they started the Iraq War: Changing the "French Fries" to "Freedom Fries", because the French decided to have a spine and opted against the war.

Do you have a German passport?

Well, "Americans" didn't really do that.  A couple of Congresscritters nobody has ever heard of made a change at the House's cafeteria that didn't last long, but when you buy them at the store or the restaurant they are ALWAYS* referred to as French Fries.  To say "Americans" did this is wrong and ignorant.

*99.9% of the time, I'm sure there are examples where some jackwad or another at Bob's House of Racist American Food may have changed the name
