I'm trying to imagine a Republican Senate candidate in 2006 declaring they don't support most of Bush's policies and it just doesn't work.

Why is Democratic intraparty discipline so godawful.

Bush made some pretty bad mistakes, if anything, it was Republican candidates not distancing enough themselves from Bush that caused them to lose. It's not like it made all the difference, but supporting Bush didn't help at all.
