Well, since Obama was able to defeat Hillary...

In a two-way Gore-Hillary race, sure.  But that's not what would have happened.  There would have been some nasty four-way race in Iowa (which it's actually possible Edwards would have won, but let's ignore that possibility).  If all three candidates hung on until SC, it's quite possible all three could have gone into Super Tuesday intact (Obama on the strength of his constituency, Hillary on the strength of hers, Gore with his own natural strength)...and this would have had the potential to turn into a convention fight.
