My incumbent city councilwoman is in her 60s. Since the ward is much younger, I get the impression from comments on local sites a lot of people are pissed off about that ("We have enough old white people in government already, etc.") and that's encouraging a lot of people to support her 34-year old and looks younger opponent.

Of course she's pissed a lot of people off for other reasons too and I am definitely voting for her opponent, but now some people have started calling out that this is ageism. Of course the main reason to vote her out is she used to be on the "neighborhood association" and is basically beholden to them now and the people who throw massive fits that about stuff that 90% of the neighborhood doesn't care about but get their way because they're the loudest (or more accurately perhaps, stuff that 80% of the neighborhood doesn't care about that 10% wouldn't care about but does only if the other 10% reminds them.) She actually sponsored a law to limit outdoor patios in Uptown bars for example...something that pissed constituents off who like to go to such places.

Well she should definitely be voted out, no doubt about that. It's probably bigoted, but I wouldn't put too much effort into discerning if it is or isn't. If we, say, applied the idea to a black person representing a 90% white area or something like that, we'd probably definitely call it bigoted. However, going around and worrying if something is bigoted or not is a waste of time. As long as you can effectively vote her out based on her non-merits, no big deal.

"We have enough old white people in government already" is neither an intellectual nor constructive argument. These people are either delusional, have a weak academic background, or are bigoted. Or all 3.

Old white people are responsible for the vast majority of the wickedness in the word, to ever-so-slightly twist an old Professor Griff statement.

I can appreciate younger folks wanting somebody of their generation in office, but the "white people" thing is kind of offensive I think.

Of course not. Nor is pointing out the disproportionate representation of white and males and those un/underrepresented complaining and trying to address that.

Really the accusation is no better than Bloom accusing Crick of being racist for pointing out UKIP has no black people on display.

Should I bold 'nor'?

Her opponent is also white and so is almost everyone bashing her.

Also she lives in a rather affluent and much older neighborhood which is hardly representative of the ward.

I think voting based on the demographics of the candidate is one of the laziest and most bigoted ways to vote. Voting against her because she is in her sixties is just as stupid as some back-country hick voting against someone because of their race.

Voting against her because of her policies, both stated and implemented, such as the outdoor patio ban, is fine. It is discriminatory and bigoted to vote for or against someone based on something they can't change.
