I'd say in order: Journalist, Teacher, PR Specialist, Salesman, or even a scientist.

What do you think?

Reagan was not an actor when he became president, he was a governor.

I honestly expect a journalist turned President once in my lifetime. Out of all the occupations we've mentioned, that's likely to happen.

Doctor is the 2nd likely one to happen.

I'd like a President that used to be in Law Enforcement. We could always have another CIA Director as President(George Bush was the last one)

There's absolutely no historical basis for thinking that presidents who 'were businessmen', whatever 'businessman' means, are any better than average. So many presidents have been lawyers that it's hard to tell if it's liable to make one a 'good' president or not.

I mentioned engineer and it seemed to be a pretty popular idea.

However, the only engineer to have ever been President was the wildly inept and unpopular Herbert Hoover.

Under looser definitions Abraham Lincoln could be counted as an "engineer", as he is the only U.S. President to hold a patent.  He was primarily a lawyer though.

Anyone who was already famous before.

A talk show host (high-brow, not Maury or Jerry), a news anchor, a foreign affairs correspondent, a well-respected journalist, a humanitarian.

Obviously they'd have to have fame, money, and strong name recognition.  An actor may not do very well unless it was someone that was an American icon, popular with both parties-- Tom Hanks, John Wayne could have ran and won, Bob Hope could have definitely won easily.
