The Scenario:

In 1982, young businessman Donald John Trump makes a bid for Governor of New York. A registered Democrat, he runs as a populist with emphasis on creating jobs and is center-left on social issues. Trump narrowly defeats New York Lieutenant Governor Mario Cuomo and New York City Mayor Ed Koch with 39% of the vote. He goes on to win a 14-point victory in the general election, aided by support from many Republicans and independents.

In 1988, Trump enters the Democratic primaries for President and becomes the nominee at a contested convention, picking Governor of Arkansas Bill Clinton as his running mate.

Initially trailing in polls, the Trump-Clinton ticket wins a surprise narrow victory over Vice President George H. W. Bush and Dan Quayle.

In 1936, Senator Huey Long ran on a third-party ticket, surprisingly defeating President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1940, being seen as a socialist, he was deposed and assassinated by a group known as the "National Renewal League", a pseudo-fascist organization with the aim of turning America into a one-party state. This group was successful and installed General Douglas MacArthur as figurehead to gain popular support. MacArthur resigned in 1942 due to corruption in the administration and the dictatorial turn, and was succeeded by one of the masterminds of the plot, FBI Director and Secretary of Security and Intelligence J. Edgar Hoover. While the U.S. originally was neutral and was courted by Germany for membership in the Axis, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 the country entered on the side of the British and French ending in an Allied victory in 1945.

The National Renewal League continued authoritarian rule until the 1970s, suppressing dissent and those it saw as socialists or communist-aligned, including many civil rights activists such as Martin Luther King Jr., who was imprisoned from 1961 until 1970.

However, the American economy continued to decline and unemployment was 15% by 1965. Radical left-wing groups sprung up all around the country, many by youth, and fearing a coup, the new Protector of the State George Wallace, seen by many as a reformer, allowed a democratic election to take place in 1970, which was overwhelmingly won by the New Populist Party, named after the Populist Party of 1936–40. New Populist candidate George McGovern was elected president, as well as in the regularly scheduled elections of 1972 and 1976. McGovern retired in 1980 and was succeeded by Martin Luther King Jr., who had been released by Wallace in December 1970, shortly before his term in office ended. Since 1972, New Populists have won every presidential election except 2008.

28. Robert La Follette (Progressive-Wisconsin) 1913–1921
29. Eugene Debs (S-Indiana) 1921–1925
30. Calvin Coolidge (Republican-Massachusetts) 1925–1933†
31. Charles G. Dawes (R-Illinois) 1933
32. Huey Long (Socialist-Farmer-Labor-Louisiana) 1933–1941
33. Elmer A. Benson (SFL-Minnesota) 1941–1949
34. Henry Wallace (SFL-Iowa) 1949–1961
35. Richard Nixon (R-California) 1961–1969
36. George McGovern (SFL-Minnesota) 1969–1977
37. Ronald Reagan (R-California) 1977–1985
38. Bob Dole (R-Kansas) 1985–1989
39. Al Gore (Center-Tennessee) 1989–1997
40. Steve Forbes (R-New York) 1997–2005
41. Bernie Sanders (SFL-Vermont) 2005–2017
42. Tulsi Gabbard (SFL-Hawaii) 2017–present

†-died in office

In this scenario, as a result of the U.S.'s non-entry into WWI, and lack of "Red Scare", the Cold War never escalates to much, except for poor relations during the "conservative era" of 1977–2005. WWII occurs and has the same result. Today, the Baltic countries, Moldova, and Tajikistan are independent and the Soviet Union, while still existing, has held elections and has had market reforms.

The major parties today are the Socialist-Farmer-Labor Party, the Republican Party, and Center Alliance. The SFL originated in the early 1930s as a merger of the Socialist Party, Progressive Party, and Farmer-Labor Party. Most populist/New Deal type Democrats joined the SFL while the more conservative ones were allied with the Republicans, and the Democratic Party gradually dissolved, although they stuck around in Congress until the 1970s, mostly with support in the rural south and midwest.

2016 presidential election:

SFL: Tulsi Gabbard/Jeff Merkley (338)
Republican: Ted Cruz/Tim Scott (119)
Center: Brian Sandoval/Susan Collins (72)
Libertarian: Gary Johnson/Justin Amash (9)

43. George W. Bush (20 January 2001 – 10 May 2005)
44. Dick Cheney (10 May 2005 – 20 April 2007)
45. Craig Thomas (20 April 2007 – 4 June 2007)
Nancy Pelosi (4 June 2007 – 29 July 2007)
46. Tom Daschle (29 July 2007 – 20 January 2009)
47. Mitt Romney (20 January 2009 – 20 January 2013)
48. Barack Obama (20 January 2013 – present)

May 10, 2005
Tbilisi, Georgia
Vladimir Arutyunian threw a grenade at U.S. President George W. Bush while he gave a speech. The grenade exploded, killing Bush and six others around him, and injuring several more. Vice President Dick Cheney received the news and was sworn in later that day.

President Cheney appointed Senator Craig Thomas as his vice president. Despite them being from the same state this was not an issue as Cheney did not plan to run in 2008. On April 20, 2007, Cheney suffered a fatal heart attack while sitting at his desk in the Oval Office. Thomas had been diagnosed with cancer in 2006 and died in June of that year. Since Thomas had not had enough time to choose a vice president Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi became acting President. Speaker Pelosi then appointed a VP. Since the 2008 election was well underway Pelosi decided to appoint someone who would not run, former South Dakota Senator Tom Daschle.

John Edwards won the Democratic nomination, defeating Chris Dodd and Hillary Clinton, and after allegations of an affair arose in August 2008 he withdrew from the race, leaving his VP pick, Kathleen Sebelius, at the top of the ticket. Due to the 2008 recession and fury over the Edwards scandal Sebelius lost to Republican nominee Mitt Romney. Romney proved to be highly unpopular, and the things he did to try to relieve the recession didn't help a whole lot. Barack Obama mounted his first presidential bid in 2012, and cruised to victory. He was reelected by a lesser margin over Marco Rubio in 2016.

2008 Presidential election

Mitt Romney/Condoleezza Rice: 270
Kathleen Sebelius/Joe Biden: 268

2012

Barack Obama/Brian Schweitzer: 389
Mitt Romney/Condoleezza Rice: 149

2016

Barack Obama/Brian Schweitzer: 287
Marco Rubio/Nikki Haley: 251

"Last Land Standing"

In the 1960s, successful Cuban-sponsored revolutions occurred in the Congo and in Bolivia, bringing the second communist state in the Americas. Subsequent revolutions between 1968 and 1981 took over Chile, Peru, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic. Finally, in 1981, Mexico was on the brink of communist revolution. On May 15, 1984, the guerilleros stormed Mexico City and the government of President Miguel de la Madrid surrendered. Later that year, at a speech at Plaza de la Revolucion in Havana, President of Cuba Fidel Castro, President of Nicaragua Daniel Ortega, and President of Bolivia Che Guevara announced the formation of the Union of Socialist Latin American Nations, and also a split from the USSR.

Meanwhile, in the United States, the government became extremely weary of the communist threat. In 1976, Ronald Reagan easily defeated President Ford in the Republican primary and selected U.S. Representative Larry McDonald as his running mate. The Republicans joined with conservative Democrats to form the Conservative People's Party. In 1980, Reagan was assassinated.

In 1979, the CPP held 319 seats in the House and 74 in the Senate.

In 1994, the USLAN dissolved, and many countries introduced reforms and democratic elections although all still have left-wing governments. Che Guevara resigned as President of Bolivia in 1998 due to health issues and died in 2007.

Due to the lesser threat and the collapse of the USSR, the CPP drastically declined. The 1996 election was decided by the House of Representatives; the CPP had a narrow 9-seat majority and elected Duke Cunningham. Cunningham lost in a landslide in 2000 to Dennis Kucinich of the Popular Reform party.

39. Ronald Reagan (CP-CA) 1977–1980 VP: Larry McDonald
40. Larry McDonald (CP-GA) 1980–1989 VP: Jesse Helms
41. Jesse Helms (CP-NC) 1989–1997 VP: John K. Singlaub
42. Duke Cunningham (CP-CA) 1997–2001 VP: William F. Buckley
43. Dennis Kucinich (PR-OH) 2001–2009 VP: Pat LaMarche
44. Mike Gravel (PR-AK) 2009–2013 VP: Dean Barkley
45. Michelle Obama (D-IL) 2013–2017 VP: Mary Landrieu
