What all presidential candidates should say: this is an issue that should belong to the states. There are too many legitimate problems that need addressing at the federal level, this doesn't have to be one of them.

This is essentially the GOP position on the issue already.  At the federal level, deny funding for abortion/Planned Parenthood and then overturn Roe v. Wade (by which they really mean Casey v. Planned Parenthood) so that GOP-controlled states can deny access altogether.

Are many Trump supporters actually unaware of his flip flop on abortion? Does anyone who isn't alresdy supporting Cruz (or Carson/Huckabee/Santorum) even care? The answer to both is probably no.

If you told them, they would probably assume his flip-flopping was strategically done as part of a decades-long plan to eventually Make America Great Again.

They will only love him more for it.

Probably, but pointing out flip flops may the only hope of deprogramming cult members.

Rand Paul, his dad, and several candidates on the GOP side would beg to differ.

I care, as do a ton of Rubio supporters that I am friends with.

Huckabee is the only real pro-life candidate. He believes abortion is murder and thus wants it banned at the national level. All the other candidates claim that it's murder but it should be left up to the states, which is just bizarre if you ask me. Santorum might actually be pro-life too but he rarely talks about it.

Also, the only other candidate with unorthodox views is Jim Gilmore, who favors legal elective abortion in the first trimester but calls himself pro-life anyway.

Trump's core supporters are true believer single-issue immigration voters who want to keep out the dirty brown people. They don't know and don't care that the majority of his proposals are illegal, unconstitutional, or impossible. He could announce support for mandatory partial birth abortions tomorrow and his poll numbers would be unchanged.

Sorry, but you're not grok-ing Trump.

Trump's (and Sanders') core supporters are people who are completely fed up with politics as usual. These folks are looking for a leader who is willing to operate outside what is considered the normal, "establishment" way of doing things. This is the first time that this anti-insider sentiment has reached critical mass, and it's creating a real headache for those who want to continue looking at this contest in the same way as they've done during past presidential cycles. I for one think this is a healthy change, especially in light of Einstein's famous quote about the definition of insanity being "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". Perhaps people have just decided to give something new a try...
