President Donald Trump phoned his Russian counterpart this week after seeing a map of widespread wildfires in Siberia, according to senior administration officials.

But their conversation also drifted to a discussion of the need for a new US ambassador in Russia, two officials said, since the current envoy Jon Huntsman is expected to depart his post soon.

Huntsman and his wife in the last few months have been on what appears to be a goodbye tour, according to an embassy source, having dinners with fellow diplomats and others as they prepare to leave the country.

It almost seems like trump is consulting with Putin about the next ambassador position.
This should be a US decision, and Russia has no say.
WTF is trump is doing?

Mr. Trump clearly acts as though he needs to clear major US actions regarding Russia with Putin. (Note that he made sure to phone Putin right after the House sent him a bipartisan threat,  but before actually doing anything.)

Why he acts that way the is real question.

I mean, it may be that he's actually a Russian agent, but is as incompetent at that as he was at running casinos. Or maybe he knows (or fears) the Russian oligarchy has incriminating or mortally embarassing "dirt" on him and he tries to keep them happy out of fear they'll release it. Or it could be that he just really wants a Moscow Trump Hotel deal. He's certainly built a strong case that he is dumb enough and amoral enough to sell out American national interests for a vanity construction project he expects to get some graft on.

US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman resigns.

US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman has submitted his resignation letter to President Donald Trump and plans to move back home to Utah, according to a source familiar with his thinking.

His resignation is effective October 3 and there is some speculation that Huntsman is planning to run for governor of Utah, a role he previous served in from 2005 to 2009. However, a source close to Huntsman told CNN that decision is still up in the air, saying: "We shall see, it's been a long two years."

Should have been done earlier. Huntsman is better than even staying in that admin for the amount of time that he did.

Now give me Gov. Huntsman.

(A rare occasion on which you and I are in agreement.)  Yes, he should have resigned a while ago.

Indeed.  But he's the kind of person I could see Trump appointing to the position.

I know, but the fact that I never even considered this until now makes me shudder.

If it was possible and trump thought he could get-away with it via the Senate, he would probably nominate Michael Flynn as the new ambassador to Russia.

I'm not sure he could get confirmed, even by a Republican senate. They have to at least pretend to be Russia Hawks, after all.
