Does anyone else do this?  I compete in Student Congress and Extemporaneous Speaking, and considering the forum demographics, I'm assuming other people here compete as well.

Debate and Speech is a required element in almost all Swedish courses, and in the highest English course you  can take in the Swedish High School, but I've never heard of any actual debate clubs or similar beyond that.

I used to be in the Drama & Theater club in Middle School though.

My school is too small to have a debate team, which really stinks, as it would really be beneficial, given my major.

I did indeed. I used to have great debates with Patrick Henry, who was a classmate of mine. Smiley

You know, to tell you the truth, I'm not sure if we have a Debate Team or not. I'd be interested in joining, though. Smiley

I used to do Lincoln Douglas debate, but I don't do it that much anymore, cuz it takes up a lot of time and I'm lazy Tongue. I might consider doing humorous interpretation, extemp, or duo next year.

Quite. That's why I quit last year. Plus, our results were rather lacklustre as well. 2 wins for 4 losses.

I do. I'm only a freshman,, but yeah, I'm a member. I don't go to the tournaments (I'm starting that next year), but it's very fun. We have practice every Friday, although I've been missing it lately (sports) Tongue. I typically practice the two-on-two debates, but I'm interested in doing L-D.

LD debate is fun but (in my humble opinion) has strayed too far from its roots and has gone completely crazy with people talking way too fast and saying way too many things. Here's an example that victorybriefsdaily.com provides: http://vimeo.com/4523498

That being said I suggest you go for it! Smiley If you don't like it you can always do speech or something else the next time!

I was a horrible debater, I'd always get way too nervous which is weird because i'm actually a very strong public speaker.

We did a debate in my (junior?) English class, but other than that, I don't really do it formally.  Now, me and my former roommate would debate all the time - but that was generally just both of us arguing back and forth in a fun sort of way.
