The U.S political "spectrum" is more like this:

                   Populist
Liberal                         Conservative
                  Moderate

Lib=Socially and Economically Left
Con=Socially and Economically Right
Mod=Socially Left, Economically Right
Pop=Socially Right, Economically Left

These days, central city Cincinnati (and Covington and Newport) is not very conservative compared to the rest of America. But when you get out into the suburbs, look out!

Let me tell ya, there's some conservative stuff going on in the suburbs!

That's true... the Dems usually win 60-70% in the inner Cities in the Cinncinnati area (Jerry Springer was mayor of Cincinnati for a while)... but the 'burbs vote 60-70% GOP.
One of the most politically divided parts of the US, IMO.

Left: Southern half of sydney, North, West and center of Melbourne, Newcastle, Woolongong, Tasmania

The whole Hunter Valley, NSW (including Newcastle) is leftwing (coalminers)... Freemantle in WA is as well... (dockers, ethnic minorities)
Tasmania was the only state to swing against Howard last election Smiley

More or less true... but a lot of NPA seats are vunerable (Gippsland or Richmond for example). North Sydney (including Howard's seat, Bennelong) remains as solidly "Liberal" as ever...

Flint is very left-wing economically (and 83% for Gore in 2000), but socially moderate. Other cities like this are Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee...

Rustbelt populism

The ethnic communities in Chicago's Northwest and Southwest side are populist, but neighborhoods near the Lake and downtown are socially liberal.

True, but overall it's populist

Most of the Populist cities in the Rust Belt are more economically liberal than socially conservative.
