They missed the primary cause of polarized counties - self-segregation by moving farther out into the suburbs.  Newer, richer suburbs are overwhelmingly Republican, leaving cities and older more established suburbs to become more Democrat because that's who's left.  

I would agree however that 'rural america' has become more polarized towards the GOP than in the past, without any major migration factors.
