As Death said, it's not a surprise, since he has campaigned with McCain since the beginning.  Unlike Zell, however, Joe is still very much a democrat, so he'll probably serve as a character witness and show the general public that it's ok to support someone that that doesn't share your ideology if you think they are the most qualified and capable.

Uh-oh.  What's going to happen to his status in the Democratic caucus?

It's already been floated that he will lose his seniority in the caucus come the next Congress since the Dems expect to pick up enough Senate seats to not need Joe's vote.

Joe is done as a Democrat after the 2008 election. Let him go to the Republicans.

And become the most liberal republican?  No.  If the Dems don't want to list them on their rolls, then when he goes up for reelection, he should run as a true independent, and not as an independent democrat.
