Most incarnations of the Doctor last about three years, so this sounds about right. I don't think they want anyone to hang around too long after Tom Baker gained a stranglehold on the role.

Will be excited for this season then. Just please, please, please, please, dear God please, don't just change the Doctor into a woman just for the sake of it.

Freeman's way too famous to take the role.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be a woman. The whole point of Missy happening was to warm up audiences toward the idea.

Hell, given Chibnall's the new showrunner I wouldn't be surprised if it was Olivia Coleman.

Which, oddly enough, ties into #13 being a woman in The Curse of Fatal Death.

Who could be put up as a female Doctor though?

Jenna Coleman? She already played the Doctor for two seasons. Tongue

Rufus Sewell, Ben Daniels, or Linus Roache are very good choice I think.

I haven't thought of him in years.

I kind of like that idea.

What's wrong with a woman as a Doctor? I think it's long overdue.

While I'm sad Capaldi is leaving, I'm excited for a new Doctor and a new writer. I'm hoping it's someone like Hayley Atwell or Emma Thompson.

Then its not the Doctor anymore. You don't make James Bond a woman. You don't make Superman or Batman a woman. I am all for making the women characters stronger and stronger, but as soon as they do a Doctor sex change then it won't be Doctor Who anymore.

But why? The show itself had already made it explicit that it's possible for Time Lords to regenerate into the opposite gender. It wouldn't change anything in the continuity.

Obviously the Thirteenth Doctor will be Dean Stockwell. Pearl Mackie will leave the show as well, to be replaced by a character by the name Sam Beckett, portrayed by Scott Bakula. Throughout Series 11, the Doctor is stuck in the TARDIS, and appears as a hologram to Sam, and goes by Al for some reason. Also, the TARDIS is using its energy to have Sam time-travel within his own lifetime. Basically, it's a sixth season of Quantum Leap.

To be honest, I'm more excited about a new show runner. While I think Moffat has been an amazing writer, I don't think the show under him is anywhere near what it was under RTD. I think some of Moffat's best writing was when he wasn't show runner (The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, and one of my personal favourite two-parters Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead). He's been very hit-and-miss writing as show runner, just as RTD was. I think Moffat's best under his own production was the Series 8 finale (Dark Water/Death in Heaven). The new Master with Michelle Gomez was pure genius. She really draws upon some of the most evil and sinister aspects of the previous Masters.  It seems like with Capaldi, Moffat has look more to Classic Doctor Who, which I like after having seen a good portion it.

I doubt they'd be this creative, but I've always thought they could bring back any previous Doctor they wanted. After all, each incarnation lives for a considerable amount of time. They could bring back the Eighth Doctor if they wanted (I'm not familiar with him, but I've heard he's good in the audio stories).  The Tenth Doctor is who I would consider to be "my Doctor", so I'd love to see him return. That's very unlikely, so we'll see what happens. I'm not sure how I feel about a female Doctor, but I'd love them to keep Michelle Gomez as Missy (the female Master) as a regular villain.

Sounds like Kris Marshall is rumored to be the next Doctor.
