A race with Rand Paul would have a lot of uncertainty.

He's a relative newcomer with some unorthodox views so he could be defined in a way that makes him toxic to swing voters.

He could also draw in the people who don't typically vote, and provide a welcome contrast to someone who has been a national figure since 1992.

If Democrats think Hillary Clinton has a tremendous edge in a standard election, they might have a preference for conventional opponents.
