I noticed this while browsing around on some areas, this county had a pretty crazy swing in the 40s:

1928:
Al Smith 55.2%
Herbert Hoover 44.8%

1932:
FDR 86.9%
Herbert Hoover 13.1%

1936:
FDR 52.4%
Alf Landon 40.5%

1940:
FDR 8.3%
Wendell Wilikie 91.7%

1944:
FDR 7.8%
Thomas Dewey 92%

The Al Smith numbers make sense since it's a heavily German county that was very anti-Prohibition (not very Catholic today per ARDA and is more Lutheran, although it might've been more Catholic back then), but that swing away from FDR in 1940 has to be one of the largest ever, especially compared to 1932. What happened here between 1936 and 1940? Did any of FDR's policies around that time alienate this area?

If it's heavily German, probably the onset of WWII, I guess? I know Willkie made a big issue out of that in 1940.

Nothing else could explain such a huge swing in these times and circumstances.
