Given that Brown, a man who has waited all his life to be leader and PM isn't quite so good at it as he thought, if he was elected following the death of John Smith rather than Blair, how would things turn out?

Could he have appealed to mytical 'middle Britain'; was Labour's election win inevitable and if it was would Brown have got a landslide?

The Labour win was inevitable, just as the Conservative one is next year and Brown could've gotten a landslide, although a noticeably smaller one than Blair got.
