Wouldn't the DNC actually be in the Barclay's Center and not Madison Square Garden?  That would mean the DNC is being held in Brooklyn where neither party has ever had a political convention.  And, as one of our local elected official said in praise of our bid for the DNC, "We have swag on lockdown.”

And, I really don't buy this idea that putting a political convention in a state amount to an electoral boost in that state.  The undecided voters in that state aren't going to attend the convention after all.  They'll watch it on TV if at all.  If you live in that specific city, maybe you'll get more local news coverage, but you'll also get inconvenienced by traffic and such related to the convention.  It would might just disrupt your field organizing in the middle of an election season.
