Recent GOP Presidential Candidates who were Catholic:
2008: Rudy Giuliani, Sam Brownback, Tommy Thompson 2000: Pat Buchanan (!), Alan Keyes, Robert Smith 1996: Pat Buchanan, Alan Keyes (note: last major non-Christian candidate: Arlen Specter, Jewish) 1992: Pat Buchanan 1988: Alexander Haig, , possibly Ben Fernandez (I don't know, but he was the first Republican Hispanic candidate, running in 1980, 1984, and 1988, only getting a very small % of the vote).
Also note that Mitt Romney and Orrin Hatch were the recent (post-1980) serious Mormon candidates.
Note that in 2008, there were more Catholic GOP candidates than any denomination except Baptist (John McCain, Duncan Hunter, Mike Huckabee, and Ron Paul are all Baptists - the first three Southern Baptists). In 2000, there were more Catholics than any single Protestant denomination.
