Idea for a TL: Trump issues a blanket pardon for everyone for 24 hours. All federal crimes would be legal, so it would basically be "The Purge: Washington, DC", but in real life.

Is pointed out in another thread, the Attorney General's office has given an opinion that a president cannot impeach themselves. That of course would go to the Supreme Court and who knows how this court would rule. All the other folks getting pardoned? Entirely doable, constitutional, and as long as the GOP Congress needs control the White House to continue stacking the Judiciary and passing massive tax cuts, stripping Obamacare, repealing Dodd-Frank, Etc, they'll weep and bemoan his lack of judgment and bad Optics, but never ever impeach him.

I mean, that's the idea, but the argument now seems to be that a pardon would just serve as a final measure to end the investigation because there would be no point one way or another. I wholeheartedly reject the entire idea, because if Trump & co did nothing wrong, they would not need pardons, no matter how annoying or disruptive the investigations are. Quite frankly that justification is downright comical in how bad it is.

However, the thing is, Trump's excuses have never been that good, and that has never stopped his supporters from accepting them as gospel anyway. They will likely do the same with this. That's what happens when people suspend logic and reason just to support someone who really hasn't done much, if anything, for them.

It is suspect in legality, and it would destroy whatever credibility he now has.

But something even worse is possible: the ability to pardon oneself at will is the effective ability to put oneself above the law. Rule of Law is the cornerstone of liberal democracy. Without it the Leader can do anything and get away with it -- even order a murder.
