Well if I lived in Hawaii I'd still support her in the general, not write in Daniel Inouye. Tongue

Same. Anti-gay, anti-public education, pro-Monsanto.

If it looks like a Republican, talks like a Republican, and acts like a Republican, then it's probably a Republican pretending to be a Democrat.

If Djou supports gay marriage he has my endorsement, bar a Green run.

I can tell you that the Hanabusa-Schatz race is very much about race.  I've seen many Hanabusa yard signs in Kalihi (a mostly Filipino neighbourhood) and in downtown Honolulu (heavily Asian neighbourhoods).  In whiter areas such as Kailua or the North Shore I have seen many Schatz yard signs.

Well Hawaii is a one-party state so everyone is a Democrat regardless of what they believe in.  There are of course many progressive people, but there are many Democratic voters who simply vote for the Democrats because their union told them to or because the Democrats are running someone from their ethnic group.

I'm probably not voting for either of them (Hanabusa or Schatz) since they're both terrible.

In the House election I just took a look at the candidates and the only decent one is Kathryn Xian.  I have read some of her articles in local newspapers websites and I like her but she's probably too left-wing for Hawaii.  I will vote for her.

To be fair, she doesn't look very much like a Republican. Tongue

IIRC, she even voted against civil unions. And attempted to water down the minimum wage increase (though it didn't work). It seems in deep blue states such as Hawaii and Rhode Island, Republicans tend to run as Democrats. Unfortunately, the opposite doesn't seem to be true.

Like I said, Xian is the only decent candidate and she wasn't even included in the poll.  That tells you all you need to know about this place.

I would love for Xian to win, but she doesn't have a chance. I'm backing Chang wholeheartedly.

As for my personal views, I would like to see Hanabusa as a new Secretary of VA. She has a good record as far as veterans' issues go.

Not really a knock on Hanabusa's part, but my mom just got this email.

Stay classy, Emily's List.

Filing closed and Republicans are stuck with several Some Dudes for HI-Sen. The most notable is Cam Cavasso who got 21-22% against Inouye in '04 and '10. Time to move this to Safe D for good.

Also, Republicans are only contesting 7/25 State Senate seats.

Emily's List are total liars if they claim that it won't be safe D with either candidate.

Sam Slom will probably remain the only Republican State Senator in Hawaii, won't he?

^ The only other real shot they have is SD-23. Clayton Hee (D) is running for LG and Romney came within 20 in that seat.

Kathryn Xian has committed to donating half her salary to people in need, if elected.

What are the chances that Hanabusa will run as an independent if she loses the primary, and if so, would that make the race more competitive?

Actually, he does not. He only was pro-DADT, but he was also pro-DOMA.

Looking at his other isssues, I'll probably refuse to endorse him too. It's a shame that one of the most liberal states might have to decide between two Republicans.

Well that's just the thing. It's not one of the most liberal states. It's just one of the most Democratic states. Obviously there's a lot of overlap between liberal/conservative and Democratic/Republican. But states like MA, CT, VT, and RI are very liberal without always necessarily being very Democratic. Alaska is one of the most Republican states, but not necessarily one of the most conservative; West Virginia being the opposite.

Looking at Donna Mercado Kim's website , she seems to be a solid progressive on most issues (or at least on the ones she mentions). Also, the website looks very low-tech, possibly hinting at an underfunded campaign. It may still be possible for a more liberal candidate to sneak through to the nomination.

She's anti-gay marriage, appointed a Monsanto shill as the head of the Water Commission, and supports funneling public education funds towards private subsidies.

Actions speak louder than words. She doesn't even deserve to be called a DINO.
