College coaches are the catholic priests of the 2010s. Of course, they were just the daycare workers of 2000s.  Who were, of course, the ice cream men of the 1980s (after all of them quit their 70s bike shop jobs).

I think it is interesting that the first two big stories so far are fairly storied programs coached by guys who have been at their respective programs a very very long time.  Football naturally gets more attention because its the cash cow...and while JimmyB is Paternoesque in some respects...I suspect Paterno's presence is/was much bigger.  Hence the PSU thing still getting most of the attention.

It'll be interesting, and not in a good way, to see how many incidents like this go on at major college sports programs.

It is almost certainly endemic.

Some on the espn comment thread are hinting (or being more explicit) that this a false claim trying to capitalize on current events.  Poor taste on their part; its not impossible BUT perhaps the PSU incident is getting people to talk about something that ordinarily humiliates them into being quiet.

It WILL be interesting to see how the media covers this story as Syracuse is one of the two big universities for journalism (along with Northwestern).

Why are you reading comments on ESPN.com?

According to reports Coach Paterno now has a treatable form of lung cancer.  That's the last thing this University needs.  My prayers are going up for him and his family.

Two more allegations against Sandusky:  http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2011/11/two_more_child_abuse_investiga.html

Both victims are under 18 and both were from the last 60 days.

With all due respect, that is the last thing anyone needs.  :(  :(

I think there is a stigma and shock against reporting male rape.  The male victims often don't want to be seen as gay or victims.  In addition, mainstream society is un-accepting of the gay lifestyle or gay intercourse, and a lot of people don't believe gay sex can occur or that it is unnatural and against nature.  A lot of people may believe that gay intercourse or anal intercourse is automatically sodomy.  Then there are people who don't want to report gay rape because they may be labeled as hate crimes.  Society has enacted laws to prevent female rapes, which used to be controlled by a marriage license to protect the female's virginity and from intercourse from any other male other than her husband.  But society has no laws regarding gay intercourse, whether it is consented or not.  In the penn state case, the young boys were not shouting for help or fighting Sandusky, and the one witness who saw the shower scene did not take more immediate action because it seemed like a consensual, but perverse sex act by an old man on a younger boy.  He may have witnessed gay sex for the first time and was unsure of what he was seeing, and if the boy consented to the anal sex.  Now, we also have catholic priests who preyed on young boys, who were also protected from public opinion, because society would never believe that gay sex abuse would occur between two males.  Perhaps it will take legal gay marriage to make the public aware that there can be both consensual adult gay intercourse and non-consensual underage gay rape.
