It seems odd that the basic premise of a country's sovereignty right to control its own borders is now affected by a) geographical proximity to another country and b) the make up of those within a particular region. Would I be wrong to say it would be similar to say that it would be fine for Germany to invade the Sudetenland on that same principle, even if the circumstances are otherwise different? I'm not sure.

Yes, but Crimea and the majority Russian regions of Ukraine have the right to autonomy, and that includes the right to rejoin Russia.

Hehe, I have three citizenships (Mexican, Spanish and American) it's crazy that I could have four citizenships if Catalonia finally becomes independent.

It has a right to exist. Russia even acknowledges that. This conflict has more something to do with "influence spheres". Russia doesn't want to cede it's influence over Ukraine away.

The thing is, the logic in the OP's signature could also be extended to say that the USA doesn't have the right to exist either. At least not beyond the original 13 states. Or actually going further, very, very few countries have the right to exist.

Which is true, wallah

And considering the sentiment expressed in this thread that larger countries have some right to a "sphere or influence" over their smaller neighbours. Well, yikes.

It makes me wonder.  Does Mexico have the right to annex South Texas?

The citizens of Ukraine want separation from Russia, not integrated back into Putinville. They've understand totalitarian regimes having lived through the USSR they know in a straight cognitive fashion a Putin-ruled country would be "meet the new boss, same as the old boss" kind of deal.
