1965: Edward Heath over Enoch Powell. Who be Maudling?

1975 : I'm only aware of who Thatcher, Edward Heath, William Whitelaw and Geoffrey Howe are, and am not sure in what order I would prefer them except that Thatcher goes last.

1989: Anthony Meyer

1990: Preferences: 4.Margaret Thatcher, 1.Michael Heseltine, 3. just for getting Maggie's support (of course only Heseltine actually stood against her) John Major, 2.Douglas Hurd

1995: John Major over John Redwood

1997: 1.Kenneth Clarke, 2.William Hague, no idea how to order those other abominations.

2001: 2.Michael Portillo, 4.Iain Duncan Smith, 1.Kenneth Clarke, 5.Michael Ancram, 3.David Davis - as all of these, this is assuming - absurdly - that I also want the Tories in government. Preferences from third are therefore based on chances of electoral victory.

2005: David Davis, David Cameron, Liam Fox, 1.Kenneth Clarke. I forget where Fox stood, so can't order him in; and Cameron scares me but might still might conceivably end up above Davis.

Labour Party:

1955: Aneurin Bevan

1960: Harold Wilson

1961: Hugh Gaitskell, Anthony Greenwood. Who was Greenwood?

1963: (of these two:) 1.Harold Wilson 2.James Callaghan. Not aware who Brown is.

1976: 2. (but see 1.) Michael Foot, 4.James Callaghan, 3.Roy Jenkins, 1. Grin (probably not if I cared for winning elections - but then Labour wouldn't, soon enough) Tony Benn, 5.Denis Healey
Anthony Crosland left unsorted because I forget where he belongs.

1980:Michael Foot over Denis Healey. Who are the other guys?

1983: 1.Neil Kinnock over Roy Hattersley. I have heard the *name* Heffer, but that's it.

1988: Tony Benn over Neil Kinnock. His defeat was assured anyways - this vote might be different otherwise.

1992: Bryan Gould just because noone else would. Cheesy

1994: 3.Tony Blair, 1.John Prescott, 2.Margaret Beckett

Reggie Maulding; M.P for Barnet from 1950 until the late '70's, senior Tory politician for most of this time, fairly liberal overall... and a crook who was up to his neck in the Poulson mess and various other dodgy dealings (this bit wasn't known back then, obviously).

M.P for Rossendale until he retired in 1970, very much on the Left, a Christian Socialist and a Unilateralist.

Hast thee not heard of George "tired and emotional" Brown?

Silkin was the M.P for Deptford from the '60's until the '80's. Can't remember as much about him as I should...
Shore was the M.P for various East End constituencies from '64 until 1997. Best known for being strongly anti-EEC/EU, but was also the first politician to decide that something should be done about the state of the inner cities (way ahead of his time on that) and was an early supporter of Wilson.

Eric Heffer was the leftwing M.P for Liverpool Walton from '64 until his death in the early '90's. Strongly religious IIRC.

Yes... sort of. It's such a generic name, it`s hard to remember it. Tongue

He was active during the early 1970's and, quite literally headed in the opposite of contemporary Reg Prentice who [hack] heroicly [/hack] crossed over to the Conservatives in 1977. IIRC he was not a fan, to put it mildly of the Lib/Lab pact

And here is walking out of Kinnocks infamous conference speech

55 Bevan
60 Wilson
61 Greenwood
63 Wilson
76 Callaghan
80 Healey
83 Heffer or Shore
88 Kinnock (Benn was a busted flush by this point).
92 Smith!
94 Probably Prescott, although I can't exactly say that I'm a fan of any of these three.

Reg Prentice was nowt but a pathetic imitation of Macdonald, Snowden, Thomas and other such traitors Tongue

Just in case anyone gets the wrong idea; Heffer wasn't a supporter of Militant. He walked out because he felt that his adopted home City was being unfairly attacked by Kinnock.

Thats true; 'scuttling round in taxis' 'grotesque chaos' etc did seem quite focused on Liverpool rather than the Militants on the whole and as far as I'm aware he was not made aware of the context of the speech before hand

Not to hijack the thread...but is there anyone in the UK who adores Thatcher?

It seems that Reagan's far more popular in the US than Thatcher is in the UK (probably an understatement I know)...but why?

Just Barnet then; they added the Chipping in either '74 or '83.

Leeds South (parts of which are in the current Morley & Rothwell seat; the estates to the south of the inner city that is, not Morley, which was twinned with Batley at the time).
