The first time I printed a roll-call vote in the U.S. House onto paper was in 2004, when Representative John Hostettler sponsored the “Marriage Protection Act”.  The law was designed to strip federal courts of judicial review in marriage equality cases.  (The second time I printed off a roll-call vote was in January of this year, with the Congressional vote to certify the presidential election.  It was the January vote that brought this topic back up in my head.)

Since I have that roll-call vote from 2004, I thought it would be interesting to track the subsequent House careers of every member of that Congress.

I divided their departures into four categories:

  • MID-SESSION DEPARTURES.  This includes deaths, as well as people who resigned because of scandal or to pursue another office.  It does not include people who were planning to seek re-election but resigned after losing a primary.
  • RETIREMENTS.  This includes people who chose not to run for re-election to their House seat for any reason, including pursuit of another office.
  • PRIMARY LOSSES.  This includes people who lost primaries or convention votes.  It also includes members who were defeated in the general election by members of their own party.  (I’m looking at you, California.)
  • GENERAL ELECTION DEFEATS.

I only included how members ended the 2004 stint.  If they left and came back, I ignored the later stint.

I remember following all roll call votes pertaining to any LGBTQ issue.  There used to be a great website, now long gone probably, that detailed every single roll call vote in state legislatures concerning LGBTQ issues as by the turn of the millennium, gay rights were becoming more discussed by pretty much everyone, even in conservative legislatures.

I imagine a lot of those moderate Republican and conservative Democratic votes are no longer in the Congress.  I wonder if there are even any left.

Charlie Dent was elected in 2004 but I know he had his own evolution and really was one of the few Republicans in the House to support LGBTQ rights.

I wonder how many true believers would vote for such a bill now.
