If Donald Trump loses the election, which is far more likely than not at this point, will his loss mainly be attributed to the pandemic? Will future political analysts and history books write that "he was on track to win reelection" if not for the pandemic? In history, there are some parallels, as Carter's loss is often attributed to the Tehran hostage crisis and Poppy Bush's to his broken promise over taxes.

I think in each cases people tend to overlook said presidents had numerous problems and most likely would have lost one way or the other. Especially in Trump's case, people need to be reminded that he was underdog even before the first infection happened. Joe Biden was constantly beating him in national and state polls, and Trump never had something close to a positive net approval. He would have been the weakest incumbent since at least 1992, if not 1980 even without the pandemic. So if anything, the pandemic likely helps Biden to win by a bigger margin and put Democrats on a better spot for senate control, but all of Trump's other problems would still have existed, including his disastrous response to race protests in the aftermath of George Floyd. Not to mention the fact Joe Biden is a stronger candidate than Hillary Clinton because he comes off as authentic and empathetic, something Hillary (sadly) failed on. And because he has less baggage and wasn't attacked for 25 years like she has been.

Thoughts?

No one reasonable is going to be saying he was on track to win the election. Even in a favorable 2018 environment where Republicans wanted to hammer down the message of a good economy, and run on Republican optimism, it didn't pan out so well for them. Even with the amount of incumbents representatives that weren't anywhere as controversial as Trump (with some even being a bit moderate) they still wound up losing.
Although it is giong to be inevitable his legacy will summed up and attributed in a significant part to his response on Covid, much like the many Roman Emperors and their failures to deal with big issues that have allowed countless successors to claim legitimacy by de-legitimizing their predecessor. Which is exactly the views people hear/read about of their accounts in their own re-tellings, and history books for centuries to come.

Yes, but mainly because people would frame it as the thing that got swing voters to vote for Biden. People would of course mention other issues such as the wall and shut down, and impeachment, but will also or should also take care to mention that on 90 percent of cases, those 45 percent of never trumpers would never flip regardless. Same with no matter what Biden says or does, trump will almost certainly hit 45. It's not just the swing voters that bolt to Biden due to covid, but the trumpers who wanted to vote for him but decided THIS was the one thing that went too far.  Its not the only reason. Its the nail on the coffin
