Slumdog Millionaire

Really good. Excellent direction. The score was really good. I thought the child actors in the first half of the first were particularly impressive.
---

Frost/Nixon

Entertaining and riveting. Fascinating character profiles. Very good film.

4 luni, 3 săptămâni şi 2 zile

Uncomfortable viewing. Emotive and trying.

Fracture

I like Hopkins generally, but the accent buged me.
I didn't like the ending, which seemed very dubious.

Watched quite a few films over the past week or so:

Doubt
Hoffman and Streep were very good. The ending was so-so, but not a bad film.

Waltz With Bashir
I didn't really know anything about the incident this film concerns. The film has its own intriguing style and a fascinating story to tell.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Watchable, though too long. A stronger second half. Not one of Fincher's finest.

Hunger
The film has a unique form of exposition and is artistically shot.

The Accused
Both Foster and McGillis are good. Decent film.

Blade Runner
It's ok, but I just don't get why this film has such a following.

Watch it again. (Was it Directors Cut, Final Cut or Original Hollywood release?)

Final Cut.
It was the second time I've seen the film. The first time, I was of the same impression as Old Europe - I thought it was really boring. (It must have been a different cut, because the ending was different.)

This time I didn't find it boring, but I didn't get anything special about it.

Mulholland Dr.

I didn't know anything about the film before I watched it; I'm not sure I know anything about the film after watching it.

Notes on a Scandal

Interesting, decent film.
I like both Dench and Blanchett.
Not sure about the ending.

Born on the Fourth of July

Young Kovic reminded me of Naso.

A Serious Man

Greatly amusing and thoroughly enjoyable. Great characters - the rabbis and Sy were particularly good. Really liked the prologue as well.

Amadeus (Director's Cut)
Wonderfully engaging. Both leads were particularly good.
Maybe just a few too many notes...

The Road
Good effort at adapting the book - but I don't think it brings across the same emotional resonance. (Too much narration at the start as well, IMO.) Mortensen was very good though.

All the 3D/CGI wizardry in the world can't cover up what is an unsurprising, unoriginal story.
A very average film.

Late Autumn

A light-hearted and charming story - it was most interesting though from a sociological (given my dearth of knowledge regarding Japanese society of the era) and cinemagraphic perspective.

That seems a bit arty for you. Just sayin'. (Ah bless the IFI and its old-directors seasons).

Grin Well spotted, sir! - it wasn't my pick.
The choice may have been in part a response to my choosing The Road last time.

I'm a big Fitzcarraldo fan..

I'd never seen anything by Herzog before, but will now definitely be keeping an eye out for it.

Iron Man 2

Bleh. Not a patch on the first film - which it tries to cover up with more explosions and wise cracks. A half hour too long to boot.

Yeah, the early consensus on RT seems to be that it's pretty good but not nearly as well-made or memorable as the original. Was there a lot of build up for Thor/Captain America/The Avengers/etc. in it?

That seemed to be the only reason for the Sam Jackson and Scarlett Johansson characters - who really could easily have been cut from the film altogether without representing any great loss.

Bad Lieutenant

Bad cop movie turned up to 11. Deliberately. I suspect had an unknown director produced this is would be straight to DVD. Nic Cage does his Nic Cage performance - and it fits ok (given the great amount of hammy and clichéd dialogue generally).
