Did Obama even know that she was in the country?

Somebody told her not to speak with the press until after November 4, giving the same answer other Obama associates have given.

not sure, but it seems he's only met her at most a few times in his entire life. Even if he did know, he probably didn't know that her asylum request had been denied.

ya'll know what you are?  a bunch o bitches, that's what you are.  you're like "omg" barack obama, you're the best, and everything that happens bad to him you got to say it's something hat' "old news" or some hit like that.  come on. you people got to be more intellectually honest than that.  his aunt contributd to to the obama campaign, and she' illegal.  that's not good and that's not american.  someone should deport that dumb bitch to Mexico where she belongs.

If you're going to be an ignorant racist, you could at least be a somewhat informed one...the aunt is from Kenya, not Mexico.

The campaign said that her nephew was "unaware of her status".

Well, if she lost her case for asylum, why didn't the appropriate authorities deport her?

She probably had a valid visa.  Visas have time limits.

Congrats, AP and London Times.  You just destroyed this woman's life.

No, that was her call.  Immigration law isn't rocket science.

I knew someone who tried to extend her visa, but made a mistake in filling in the address in some form, and thus never got the subsequent things-she-was-supposed-to-do until it was too late.  She essentially had no choice but to overstay.  At my parents' house, the mail flies sort of haphazardly through a hole and often ends up on the floor of the garage -- sometimes in a crack between the porch and the heating unit which we didn't discover until months or maybe even years after we moved in.  Eventually we figured out that there had been a credit card bill and I don't remember what other important documents stuck there for a while.  What if that had happened to an immigration document?

sh**t happens.  I think the immigration system should be forgiving.  This is the land of opportunity, after all.  But I'm biased, I suppose.

I think it's a non issue if Obama had no idea that she was in the country illegally.  If he knew, that would be a bit different.

It is illegal for non resident aliens (legally resident) to contribute, so I hope he didn't take it.

I don't disagree, but this situation isn't a case of "oops".  Her asylum request was denied = she should go home.

He can pardon, but not grant asylum.  Immigration law is set by Congress.

Lets stop and look at this case to illustrate several points, first setting aside any involvement by Barack Obama.

First, this case illustrates the falseness of the insinuation that all illegal aliens are of Mexican origin and that therefor opposition to illegal aliens is somehow opposition to Mexicans.  For those of you who didn't bother reading the initial post, the "aunt" is of Kenyan nationality.

Second, the allegation that illegal aliens don't break other laws (other than being here illegally) is disproven with the campaign contribution, which under federal law. is generally illegal for aliens.

Third, the allegation that illegal aliens do not use "welfare" type services (she lives in public housing).  If federal funding for the housing project were involved (highly likely), this would also probably be illegal.

Fourth, the failure of the system to operate.  The "aunt" was denied (after due process) asylum four years ago, but has yet to be deported!

That point is logically redundant.

And why are you putting 'aunt' in quotation marks?

First, I'm sorry Mango, but, many here (at this forum) have asserted that other than being here illegally, illegal aliens do not violate other laws.  My point is that this is simply untrue, as this case illustrates.

Second, I do not wish to mangle the name of the woman in question, so I simply used the "aunt" disgnation used in the article.

But her donation was illegal as a consquence of her being an illegal alien. The two aren't mutually exclusive. The fact the she breaks the first law means she automatically breaks the second by making the donation.

You seem to be under the misimpression that foreign nations can generally legally make contributions .
