I think the show's lost it's way. Back in the golden age, there was real tension about the world in general, but other than the 2000 season, which was genuinely exciting if a bit gimmicky, these last few seasons have put too much focus on winning the election, rather than winning the leadership of the free world.
That's a separate, non-elected position, and they stopped even pretending anything else a while ago.
