Chase is an interesting man to say the least. I thank God he was not president durring the war because the letters he would have wrote would have been annoying clusters of complaints and petty book keeping. This is why he was cut out to be Secretary of the Treasury.

His planned cabal against Lincoln in Spring 1862 is quite interesting to read about. It is amazing how the president was able to control the crisis and, on top of it, make Chase look silly and foolish durring the whole crisis.

On balance, a FF.  He had some negatives, but the positives win out.

A rather pathetic and almost comic figure really. He just took himself so seriously. The weight of all that  gravitas on his shoulders drove him kind of batty.
