"Traditional" moderate Republicans tend to be more driven by money than religion, and as such place very low emphasis on social issues. Once elected to the U.S. House or Senate, of course, their party whips them into supporting the party line more often than not. Increasingly conservative leadership has been aggressively suppressing their ability to offer compromise or their own moderate bills. Dissension is allowed only when votes aren't absolutely needed for passage, but that's really nothing new.
