The media doesn't make things up but they do go overboard on some stories. Trump gives them a level 5 stupid comment and they turn it in to a level 11 national crisis. i don't like Trump and might even vote democrat against him in 2020 but the idea that the media covers him completely honestly is a joke.

     Yeah, the media causes a lot of its own issues here. I doubt they make much of anything up wholesale, but they have a talent for blowing things out of proportion (as do Democrat partisans, though they have obvious reasons for doing so). The result of that is that it becomes harder to trust the news stations to report the news, which is a bad thing for their long-term health. It really should come as no surprise here, as focus on short-term success is an all too American institution.
