I suspect something like this but with more people we don't know or don't expect yet. The economy goes south and the GOP, already expecting the White House to flip back as usual, puts some sacrificial lambs on the ticket. Democrats try an Obama strategy by running neoliberals paying lip service to progressives who run up minority turnout. Enough Obama-Trump voters stay on to keep Iowa and Ohio Republican, Texas just barely flips, Georgia is close but ultimately stays Republican.

Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) / Fmr. HUD Secretary Julián Castro (D-TX)
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) / Fmr. Governor Nikki Haley (R-SC)

Castro wont run for higher office again

Placeholder for a younger Texan latino politician. Another go-to of mine is Ruben Gallego, but he's from Arizona and I wanted to specify that the Democrats are actively going after Texas.
