Cruz calling for monitoring Muslim areas

Cruz has called for law enforcement patrols to secure muslim neighborhoods (see the NBC News article).

He's gotten heat from some people, but is receiving support from Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy. Dr. Jasser's statements:

I guess he's a useful fig leaf to ward off accusations of Islamophobia, though. At the _trump rally I protested, the crowd handpicked to sit behind _trump included people holding signs reading "MUSLIMS FOR _trump", "SIKHS FOR _trump", and so on and so forth for like 10 different religions (along with the more generic "silent majority" signs or just his name). Only "silent majority" signs were passed out to the crowd, though.
